Kung Fu Panda is one of those gems of a kids’ film that will entertain the parents and older siblings more than its supposed target-audience. Based on the preview alone, I expected nothing more than a Jack Black vehicle with animals instead of people. And sure, in some ways, that’s exactly what it is — but that’s not all it is. True, the basic premise is fairly predictable. But the characters are so well drawn, the backstories so solid, that it was never a problem for me. Plus, the painfully clever training sequences proved you can still put a fun spin on an old story — and kids films can still make an audience laugh harder than any of the PG-13 romps that have come out this year.
